Google Meet has added an AI-powered "note-taking" feature. The feature was announced in a post published on August 27, 2024. This feature allows users to take notes and focus solely on the presentation or discussion.
The highly anticipated "Note-taking" feature, first announced at the Google Cloud Next 2023 conference, is part of the Google AI rebranding. The feature will be available to select Google Workspace users who subscribe to Gemini Enterprise, Gemini Education Premium, or AI Meetings & Messaging.
This feature allows all members of your organization to access meeting minutes by adding them as a calendar event. All meeting participants and organizers who have enabled this feature will also receive a reminder with a hyperlink to the file. The "Recap" feature allows people who arrive late to a meeting to quickly catch up.
However, this feature is currently only available in English for Western users. This feature changes the dynamics of meetings by allowing participants to actively participate in the discussion without having to take notes. It eliminates redundant information and allows all important agenda items to be easily accessed and recorded after the meeting.
Admins will need to ensure that "Take notes on your behalf" is set as default within the Gemini AI add-on settings. This can be done from the Admin console by navigating to Apps > Google Workspace > Google Meet > Gemini settings. Once admins have enabled the feature, users will be able to use it immediately in their meetings.
The feature will be available to all users by the end of September 2024. It may take 15 days for full access to be available. This gradual rollout allows Google to ensure stable functionality across the platform.
Google's automated transcription is a follow-up to a similar initiative from Zoom, with the platform adding a similar feature last year, signaling a growing trend of integrating AI into digital communication tools to improve efficiency and productivity.
